Other suggestions are a bit extreme such as using proxy servers and desktop privacy software.

It really comes down to how much time you are willing to put into protecting your privacy. Most people just need to be aware that when you use the internet you are being watched and recorded. Using the internet is just like being out in public. The only guaranteed way for you to keep your activities private is to stay off the internet or you can limit your public exposure by subscribing to premium services and subscriptions such as e-mail, blogging, and gated social networks.
