Market Forces vs. Traffic Jams: Eliminating Traffic Jams with RFID & GPS

Interesting proposal where all drivers would be equipped with RFID or GPS to track their road usage and where they would pay higher tolls for using roads during rush hour.

Digg post: “New research shows that making drivers pay higher tolls at peak times and tracking their location with RFID or GPS technology can eliminate traffic jams.”

I’m sure this road usage tracking solution would reduce traffic jams, but it could hurt people that have no choice, but to drive during rush hour. Maybe one thing they could do is charge the employer if the employer required the worker to be at work at a certain time. It is hard for me to have strong opinion on this initiative as that I work from home.

This idea of tracking road use using GPS has come up before as a way for the Government to tax us. Instead of taxing you by the vehicle you drive or the gasoline you buy, with GPS equipped cars the Government could tax you by the mile. Interesting idea, but there would be much resistant to changing the way Government collects money to maintain our highway system.
