Controlling Your Kid’s Online Content
I love the internet, but it does have a dark side. How do we protect our kids online from sexual predators, spam, pornography, extreme violence, foul language, scams, and just plain weird stuff?
I would personally like for some content to be banned, but not sure how best to do that. There are starting to be a lot of good parental control software that filters offensive content (see our Parental Controls Site for featured products). This may be part of the solution, but it is no guarantee that your kids cannot access offensive sites. CNET News.com posting: Kids outsmart Web filters has a good write-up on how kids at home and at school are getting around web filters. There are even “proxy” sites that help them get to offensive sites even if the kid has a parental control filter on the computer. These sites seem no different than selling beer to children.
I think the best way to protect your kids is to just stay involved. Also, have them access the internet from a common area and not from the privacy of their room.
