ATM Reprogrammed to Give Out 4X More Money

The article says that the man used a prepaid debit card to get away with the robbery. They still have not been able to identify the thief. I would assume that the prepaid debit card that was used did not have a Mastercard or Visa logo. All of these cards require a person’s name on them and in most cases the card issuers does an identity check before mailing the prepaid debit card to the individual’s home.

Digg.com post, “Last month, a man reprogrammed an automated teller machine at a gas station on Lynnhaven Parkway to spit out four times as much money as it should.”

The thief reprogrammed the ATM where it would issue 20 dollar bills, but only debit the prepaid debit card 5 dollars for each 20 dollar bill. It took the ATM owners 7 days to figure out what was happening. I wonder how many people made withdrawals during that time and did not tell anyone?
