Supreme Court Rules For Cable Companies
It seems to defy logic that the Supreme Court would rule in favor of cable companies in regard to sharing internet lines. This Supreme Court ruling allows cable companies to basically have a monopoly in regard to their cable lines. Telephone companies do not have the same rights with their copper wire lines. Telephone companies have to share their telephone lines with their competitors. This does not seem fair or to help the general public.
The fault lies with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) where they have classified cable companies as information service providers versus telephone companies are telecommunications providers. This makes no sense, but this is why the Supreme Court ruled as they did. A telecommunications company must share its telephone lines. An information provider does not have to share its communications medium (i.e. cable). See WebProNews posting: Cable Companies Don’t Have To Share Lines for more details.
