Google Is Compiling A List With Your Name On It

It is not just Google compiling a list with your name on it. Yahoo!, MSN, marketers, retailers, Government, credit bureaus, and many more are also compiling lists on you. With computers and internet technology, many organizations can store and access billions of documents and web pages. As these organizations continue to build their databases, your name will be increasingly on everybody’s list, several times. You can start assuming that anytime your name is written down it will become a public record in some way or fashion.

It use to be that you could assume you would have a fair amount of privacy if you were not famous or not in the “public light.” You cannot subscribe to the “security by obscurity” adage any more. Just try typing your name in quotation marks into Google or Yahoo!. If you have ever served or been recognized in any community group, your name will be there in the search results. For usually twenty dollars or less, anyone can find out your address, telephone numbers, the age of your relatives, where you went to school, when you got married, and much more using a People Locator Service. If you apply for credit, insurance, or employment, they can find out what bills you pay and which ones you have not in the last seven years. See TechDirt’s posting Escaping Your Google Past for more about the challenges of escaping from your past or just protecting your privacy in this day and age.
