Excessive Use Of E-mail And Text Messages Reduces Intelligence

If you feel numb, confused, and not so smart after being bombarded with a bunch of e-mail and text messages, now there is scientific evidence to back up those feelings you have been having. A new study just out claims that you will suffer a fall in IQ (average of 10 points) when you are subjected to excessive e-mails and text messages. My solution for this is to set my e-mail to download only every two hours and to turn off my instant messaging program. This may be anti-social, but I need all the IQ I can get.

Smart Mobs posts: ‘Infomania’ worse than marijuana. Workers distracted by email and phone calls suffer a fall in IQ more than twice that found in marijuana smokers, new research has claimed, reports the BBC.

The study for computing firm Hewlett Packard warned of a rise in “infomania”, with people becoming addicted to email and text messages.

The study, carried out at the Institute of Psychiatry, found excessive use of technology reduced workers’ intelligence.

Those distracted by incoming email and phone calls saw a 10-point fall in their IQ - more than twice that found in studies of the impact of smoking marijuana, said researchers.
