Cell Phone Etiquette - Answering Phones

I’m probably one of the few remaining persons on the planet to not own a cell phone. One reason I do not own a cell phone is that I do not want it to interrupt me when I’m doing something. I guess I’m compelled to answer a phone if it rings. That is not the case with my teens. They will selectively answer their cell phone and they are not bothered if it just keeps ringing. If you notice, the cell phone etiquette for most people over thirty is to answer the cell phone if it rings. Cell phone etiquette for people under thirty is quite different. I assume the reason for the difference in cell phone etiquette is that people over thirty remember when long distance telephone calls were expensive and infrequent. We would never think of not answering our phone. With people under thirty telephone calls are inexpensive and frequent. They are not bothered with not answering a telephone call. This is a case where we need to learn from our kids. We should not let phones interrupt our lives.
