Banks Protect Customers From Phishing Scams

Banks are starting to come to the rescue of their customers caught up in phishing scams. This is good news as millions of consumers and businesses are hit by phishing scams each year. A phishing scam usually starts off with an e-mail from a financial institution or online store asking you to update your account. In the e-mail is an link to what you think is your financial institution web site. In reality it is a fake web site. If you enter in your personal financial information, you are really giving thieves what they need to take over your identity. They will use your personal financial information to open up credit accounts in your name and to clear out your bank account.

I receive a couple phishing e-mails a week. Many of them look like they are from PayPal. I just forwarded the PayPal e-mails to spoof@paypal.com and they verify the e-mail. If it is a phishing e-mail, they tell me and I assume they take action on it.

There are other ways ID thieves get your personal financial information. See our Electronic Cash News posting: Electronic Cash News » Blog Archive » Many Buying Shredders, But Not Answer To Most ID Theft Threats.
