In Oregon a wireless entrepreneur has built a $5 million rural Wi-Fi hotspot that stretches out over 700 square miles. Better yet the rural Wi-Fi hotspot is free to consumers. Though the rural Wi-Fi hotspot service is free to consumers, the wireless services makes money off of small Government and businesses. Small Government agencies and businesses are using the rural Wi-Fi hotspot service for surveillance, intelligent traffic systems, intelligent transportation, and for distant education. See SmartMobs posting: World’s largest hotspot for more details.
It is amazing that telecommunications companies have not rolled out Wi-Fi and WiMax service yet Nationwide. It is amazing that in rural Oregon farmers can get free wireless broadband service, but I have to pay for Wi-Fi hotspot service at many airports. Thanks to small business persons and entrepreneurs we can look forward to leading-edge products and services at great prices, or even free if you live in rural Oregon.
