Feds are showing that they are serious about slowing down online copyright infringement. Last month President Bush signed a new law that set tough penalties of up to 10 years in prison for anyone caught distributing a movie or song prior to its commercial release.
In the last month, Feds have gone after peer-to-peer networks such as the Elite Torrents site to stop the distribution of illegal file sharing. Now with the arrest of Chirayu Patel of Fremont CA, the Feds are going after the people that trade in copyrighted materials. The traders in copyrighted movies and songs are a harder bunch to catch as they use encryption technologies and offshore hosts. I would expect they are well funded with International buyers and sellers of first release movies and songs. See E-Commerce Times posting Justice Department Cracks Down on Online Pirates for more information on the Feds’ Operation Shutdown to slowdown the online distribution of copyrighted materials.
Overall, I think this is a good move for the Feds. Yes, we all want free, first-run movies, but is it ethically the right thing to do. I think all this free downloading just corrupts us. Downloading illegal music, movies, and software is no different than buying stolen property out of the back of someone’s car trunk. On the other hand if we think people like Bill Gates makes to much money from their copyrighted materials, we need to work to change the laws.
